Santa Paula Relay

This past weekend I volunteered at the Santa Paula Relay for Life. Thanks to National Charity League, I was given the opportunity to work at the registration booth and get everybody excited and ready to participate. My mom also helped and I must say- we are quite a team. She's a ton of fun to work with and she can bring a smile to anybody's face with her enthusiasm. We also got to walk a few laps around the track and I helped my aunt run her booth. There are a lot of cancer survivors in my family (my grandma, my aunt, and my mom) and they were all there with me on this special day. I left for the Agoura Relay a little later that day, but then I came back to Santa Paula to speak to the relayers about what they can do to prevent cancer along with telling them about my personal story, while sharing with them the importance of hope. More importantly, I conveyed the message of appreciating every moment of your life and to truly enjoy spending time with those closest to you. Afterward, my dad and I walked the track and it was very beautiful watching the track light up with luminary bags. Each person was given a candle and we all gathered together to experience a touching luminary ceremony. It was an amazing day- one that I will never forget!

UCLA Relay

Last weekend I went to UCLA for a Relay for Life. It was a completly new experience- I had never been to UCLA and I am now definitely considering it. I want to major in communication and I have heard that they have a great program. However, my goal is Pepperdine- I would love to go there! Anyway, back to business- the relay was interesting! I had never been to a college environment relay, but it was definitely entertaining! Since we arrived in the morning, most people were walking in their pajamas and it was funny to watch them dancing to the music playing. The great part about any relay is that there is always an aura of comradship because everyone is there to make a change in their a community. A change- to find the cure for cancer. It truly inspires me everytime and I am always reminded that no matter what differences there are between myself and others at a relay, there is always a hope for a wonderful life and an appreciation for life. It is touching and a blessing to be around so often!

Record-A-Thon

Last week I went to Santa Barbara to do a recording of "My California" for blind and dyslectic students. It was a great experience and I have to admit- I felt pretty cool being in a little sound booth recording! I was able to meet the Ms. Senior California from another pageant system, so it was interesting to hear her story. While I recorded, I had a moderator who helped me record and she was great to work with. I never knew how hard it could be to continuously speak. My throat got dry after just about 20 minutes! The recording was awesome and I loved being able to support such a great cause!

Mother Daughter Luncheon

Last weekend my mom and I attended the Mother Daughter Luncheon for the Empower to Purpose Program. It was an honor to be there, and the theme was called, "Leaving a Legacy". I met many amazing women and their daughters and it was a wonderful experience to be apart. Since my mom and I are Christians, it was very special to be with such amazing women of God. I had the opportunity to speak about my faith and how my mom left me a legacy of optimism and to always have hope for life. My mom also got to speak- it was very touching! I admire my mom so much- she is an incredible woman, and it was great to be with her and so many great women on that day!

Interact Club

The other day I spoke to the Interact Club about participating in Relay for Life. About 10 people signed up and it was a wonderful feeling to get that many more involved! The relay preparation is going great- we have 31 team members and we have two upcoming fundraisers. Our team has now raised $1,140 and we plan on raising $4,500. Therefore, $3,360 to go! Please keep our team success in your prayers!

Relay Fundraisers

Last Wednesday and Friday I held multiple bakesales and a pie-in-the-face auction. With only six other people helping me, we raised $235.00! I was so thrilled by this and we divided the money amongst ourselves. So far, our team has now raised $525.00 and I have raised $180.00. I am planning on fundraising later this week though.
The pie in the face auction went really well and people were actually volunteering to get pied. It was thrilling for me to see my peers getting involved on campus and having fun while raising money for cancer.
We also had a bakesale- we had brownies, cupcakes, cookies, chocolate suckers of all kinds! Everyone wanted a little something- even the teachers. The bakesales went so well, that I even had one at the dance.
I'm so excited about how well it went- I'm overjoyed that my student body is getting involved. Even though I was really sick that week, my teammates helped the events go successfully and we did very well!

Cheer Banquet

Last Thursday, my family and I attended my cheer banquet. It was a happy night- many memories were shared and it was nice seeing some old friends. Since I go to Foothill, I never got to see the Ventura girls that I cheered with unless at practice or a game- so it was a pleasant reunion. It was a worthwhile experience and I learned so much about myself through the process during cheer.
My mom is a former cougar, so the tradition now lives on in our family. She was always very supportive, along with my dad, and they attended all the basketball and football games. I had a great time learning all the cheers and dance routines- and I especially had fun at cheer camp at UCSB.
Because I have always been a ballet dancer, cheer was challenging for me. I consider myself to have a delicate persona- I'm not typically a loud and outgoing person- or at least, to the extent of a cheerleader. Due to this, I was able to go outside of my comfort zone and grow. I met many new people and I learned how to truly work with a team- which was something new for me.
There were times when I really wanted to quit- especially after I won the pageant. I knew I was going to be so busy from then on, and at that point cheer would take anywhere from two to six hours a day. I felt extremely overwhelmed. Yet, thanks to my mom and myself, I continued and persevered. It felt so wonderful to be at that banquet because I didn't give up on myself or let the team down. I felt proud that I never gave up.
Another really cool thing- at the banquet they give out paper plate awards. They're supposed to be cute and funny- mine definitely was! I was given the "Most Likely to Become the Next Miss USA"! heehee

Ticktocker Award Ceremony

Last weekend I went with my mom to the National Charity League Service Awards. My mom and I completed over 20 hours of community service together and I completed a total of 101.5 hours this year. Overall, since the 7th grade I have completed 650 hours total. I'm so thrilled to be apart of National Charity League and because of the experience, my mom and I have become even better friends. It all has gone by so fast- I'm so sad that I only have about two more years to go!

Crowning Glory Pageant

The other weekend I attended the Crowning Glory Production's pageant. Coming from Ventura, it was especially exciting to see the four new winners. There was a miss and teen competition for four titles: Miss and Teen Ventura County and Miss and Teen Greater Conejo Valley. Sammi Riddle and Ashley were the two miss winners and Lace Granatelli and Allison Soto were the two teen winners.
Connie, the director of the pageant, did a fabulous job. She and her husband, Marty, are currently "Director's of the Year" and I feel so privileged to come from such a wonderful pageant family. It was so sweet of them; they gave Mary, Rebekah, and me each a beautiful stone saying our titles on it. I love it!
The pageant was amazing- great set, great people, and great fun! Hilary, my former sister queen, hosted the pageant and she did a fabulous job. She was given a special President's Award for all of her community service during the pageant- I was so proud of her!
I got to speak at the pageant- which I was a little nervous about it- but I did it and once I started, I felt very comfortable. The pageant was at the Civic Arts Center so there were a lot of people there. I spoke about my platform, the International pageant system, and I gave special recognition to Crowning Glory Productions and my director, Eddie.
It was also an honor to crown the two new teen winners. I was especially excited to do this because Lace and Allison are good friends of mine. I competed with them at state and we have gotten to know each other really well. I'm sure that they'll do a wonderful job at state. Connie also honored Hilary, Courtney, and me as our year as Ventura titleholders came to a close. What a wonderful experience it has been and I look forward to many more fun times to come!!
